OBS is one of the most popular live streaming apps. Although the app has been available for macOS users for a long time, the current version of OBS is only fully compatible with Intel Mac computers. Fortunately, this will change soon. This week, the platform released the first beta version of OBS Studio 28, which not only adds new features, but also runs natively on Apple Silicon Mac computers.

As the app’s developers have announced on their official website, the latest OBS Studio beta update finally brings native support for the Apple Silicon platform. This means that Mac users with M1 and M2 chips will see a significant performance boost when using OBS.

Thanks to Rosetta technology, Apple Silicon Mac computers can run Intel applications without major problems in most cases. However, these applications cannot use the full performance of Apple’s ARM chips. When an app has built-in support for Apple Silicon, it not only runs faster but also uses less power, which is great for MacBook users.

Keep in mind that despite Apple Silicon Mac support in the main OBS app, third-party plugins will also need to be updated to natively work with M1 and M2 chips.

But, of course, other new features and improvements will come with the OBS update. For example, version 28 added support for 10-bit HDR video, as well as support for the new ScreenCaptureKit API for high-performance screen capture on macOS. The update also greatly improves support for the Apple VT encoder.

Unfortunately, due to the new platform used by the app, OBS Studio 28 will no longer support some operating systems. This version no longer works with Windows 7 and 8, macOS 10.13 and 10.14 and Ubuntu 18.04. It is also no longer compatible with 32-bit architecture.
