Usually, debris from rockets and other space capsules falls into the ocean. Unfortunately, this time debris from a SpaceX capsule landed on a ranch in Australia.
Farmers in the Snowy Mountains region of southeastern Australia recently made an astonishing discovery on their plot: a strange black monolith planted in the ground.
In total, 3 debris were thus spotted in the same area, the three being in reality pieces of a Crew-1 capsule from the American company SpaceX.
The Australian Space Agency (ASA) has confirmed the origin of the debris, which has been analyzed by experts. Australian National University astrophysicist Brad Tucker believes these are pieces of a Crew 1 capsule launched in November 2020. They are believed to be part of the Dragon cargo ship that was used to ferry astronauts to the ISS. A part of the module separated normally and ended up falling back into the atmosphere at the beginning of July. If most of them have disintegrated, some pieces, particularly imposing by their size and weight, have however reached the ground.
This is the first time that such an event has been reported and the situation raises some questions. In particular if SpaceX intends to recover its debris, but above all the risks of seeing the situation reproduce with debris which could have crashed in inhabited areas with a disaster scenario at stake.
The probability of seeing this debris crashing into inhabited areas remains low, despite everything the acceleration of space tourism and launches in recent years have only significantly increased this risk.
