Apple just updated the firmware on the new Siri Remote. Announced with the second-generation Apple TV 4K, the remote control is available with the purchase of an Apple TV HD or separately. Here’s what we know about this update.
This firmware update comes right after Apple released the fifth beta of iOS 15.6, iPadOS 15.6, watchOS 8.7, macOS 12.5, and tvOS 15.6 to developers. Since the Siri Remote was announced at the April 2021 Spring Loaded event, Apple is updating its firmware for the third time.
According to MacRumors, the previous firmware was 9M6772 and the new one is 10M11103. While Apple regularly releases new firmware updates for its AirPods lineup, the Siri Remote has been waiting for almost a year for a new version to be available.
For example, in the latest beta firmware for AirPods, there are links to the LC3 codec for AirPods Max. For those who don’t know, the LC3 codec is the upcoming low-power, high-quality Bluetooth codec coming to headphones soon. A low complexity communications codec – LC3 for short – will be able to transmit at a much lower bit rate without the audio quality degradation that we currently see in the Bluetooth standard.
While the company doesn’t reveal what’s changed in this Siri Remote firmware update, it’s likely that Apple is improving performance by fixing minor bugs. With the new iPod-like control wheel design of the Siri Remote, this firmware update may be related to this as it can be a little unreliable for users. In the past, Apple has had to update the Apple TV software to improve integration between the set-top box and remote control.
Apple doesn’t say how you can update the Siri Remote’s firmware, but if you can guess it will be charging the remote while the Apple TV is on.
As we learn more about this firmware update, we will be sure to let you know the available features.
