The share of laptops without a pre-installed OS is growing in Russian imports. It is reported by “Kommersant”.
According to the source, among all laptops imported to Russia in June, about 60% of devices arrived without a pre-installed OS. Back in the spring, the share of such computers was 40%, and in the first couple of months of 2022 – only 25%. Experts predict that by the end of the year the volume of imported “dummy” laptops will be 80-90%.
Allegedly, suppliers and importers are buying laptops without Windows pre-installed to save money and keep the price tag down for the end customer. The price difference can be up to 10%. A Citilink spokesperson notes:
“Almost all laptop brands represented in Russia offer non-OS versions. … Such devices are convenient for users, since their cost is lower than similar models with OS, and the buyer can choose a convenient software package on his own.”
At the same time, another interlocutor of Kommersant notes that when a consumer buys a laptop without a pre-installed OS, in 80% of cases he installs hacked software on it.
Earlier we wrote that the number of requests for downloading pirated versions of Windows has increased dramatically from Russia. This is due to the fact that Microsoft left the country and tacitly restricted the ability to download Windows from Russian IP addresses.
