Barrier breakers on the ball: Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi on the exclusive NBA 2K23 WNBA Edition cover
2K announced today that Phoenix Mercury’s Diana Taurasi—two-time MPV at the Kia WNBA Finals, three-time WNBA Champion, WNBA All-Time Leading Scorer, and five-time Olympic gold medalist—along with Seattle Storm’s Sue Bird—was a four-time WNBA Champion, thirteen-time WNBA All-Star, WNBA All-Time Assists Leader, and five-time Olympic gold medalist—will grace the cover of the NBA 2K23 WNBA Edition.
The NBA 2K23 WNBA Edition, available exclusively at GameStop in the US and Canada only, is the second game in the history of the NBA 2K series to feature WNBA athletes on its cover. Diana and Sue join Michael Jordan as current NBA 2K23 cover athletes; another important cover announcement follows tomorrow.
“It’s an incredible feeling to see your hard work recognized on the cover of a game like NBA 2K23,” said Taurasi. “There are so many kids who dream of becoming basketball pros. Now they can dream of appearing on an NBA 2K cover too, whether in the NBA or WNBA.”
“Reaction to the inaugural WNBA Edition of NBA 2K over the last year has been overwhelmingly positive and is a testament to The W’s growing awareness and popularity,” said Alfie Brody, 2K’s vice president of global marketing strategy. “Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi have risen to basketball greats both individually and as a team, setting in stone their status as two of the greatest players in WNBA history.”
To recognize the dedication of Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi, who have championed equal opportunity for women in basketball throughout their careers, NBA 2K is partnering with the two WNBA stars to donate $100,000 to Every Kid Sports, giving young girls the opportunity to Participate in national basketball programs.
The donation will cover registration fees for more than 550 girls from low-income families, empowering basketball youth. Every Kid Sports is a national non-profit organization whose goal is to provide children with access to youth sports in their free time.
“It’s just awesome to be on the cover of a video game that has such a cultural impact,” Bird says. “And through our partnership with NBA 2K and Every Kid Sports, Diana and I can open the doors to youth basketball for hundreds of young girls across this country. It’s an honor to be on the cover and an even greater honor to be able to use my notoriety to create opportunities for the next generation.”
“The partnership with 2K and the two exceptional athletes is something very special for our organization,” emphasizes Natalie Hummel, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Every Kid Sports. “We are very pleased about their support and commitment to our mission to break down the barriers to entry into youth recreational sports. I look forward to working together towards our goal of more equal opportunities in sport by enabling girls from low-income families to participate in youth sport.”
The NBA 2K23 WNBA Edition will include Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi’s WNBA jerseys as bonus in-game content. Stay tuned for more cover athlete announcements and pricing for the pre-orders launch on July 7th.
