With Wi-Fi 7, the wireless Internet connection should finally replace wired LAN access. For this purpose, the transmission speed increases to over 5 Gbit/s.
The first routers and end devices that use the Wi-Fi 6 standard are now available. Regardless of whether you use Wi-Fi 4, 5 or 6, all of these standards transmit either in the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz range. Only Wi-Fi 6E also mastered the 6 GHz range. The spectrum between 5,945 and 6,425 MHz is now available for Wi-Fi 6E. So far, Wi-Fi 6 has operated at 540 MHz in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands. With the additional radio channels, WLAN systems in densely populated regions should be easier to distinguish and therefore less susceptible to interference. In any case, the maximum data rate for Wi-Fi 6 and 6E is 2.4 gigabits/s, with only a fraction of this reaching the respective end device. The next jump with a higher data transfer rates are available with Wi-Fi 7. According to Intel, the first PCs and laptops will be equipped with a corresponding WLAN chip from 2024.
Higher transmission speed with Wi-Fi 7
Intel is currently developing the Wi-Fi 802.11be aka Wi-Fi 7 standard. According to the manufacturer, the future standard for wireless Internet connections should offer transmission speeds of up to 5.8 Gbit/s. However, in addition to the PC, the router must also have Wi-Fi 7. In order to achieve such a high speed, all three frequency bands must be used, i.e. 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz. In addition, Wi-Fi 7 masters the channel width of 320 MHz, while Wi-Fi 6 can only use a maximum of 160 MHz. Before Intel, Broadcom and Qualcomm introduced modems that support Wi-Fi 7. Qualcomm would like to introduce a WLAN chip with Wi-Fi 7 as early as the end of 2023.
Wi-Fi 6 and the Wi-Fi 6E extension can currently be found in many end devices. A maximum of gigabit WLAN can be used with it – currently. A higher transmission speed should be possible with Wi-Fi 7. In addition, the number of possible individual connections increases from the current 1,024 to 4,096 QAM.

Collection for the upcoming Wi-Fi 7 standard:
- Intel has announced that the first devices with the upcoming Wi-Fi 7 standard will be available from 2024.
- With Wi-Fi 6 and 6E, the theoretical data rate is a maximum of 2.4 Gbit/s. The successor Wi-Fi 7, on the other hand, is said to offer a maximum data rate of 5.8 gigabits/s.
- In order to achieve such a high speed, all three frequency bands must be used, i.e. 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz.
- Before Intel, Broadcom and Qualcomm want to launch Wi-Fi chips with Wi-Fi 7. Qualcomm, for example, is planning to present a corresponding modem at the end of 2023.
