Today we decided to recall a few atypical films in the horror genre. To do this, we tried to choose several paintings that differ in atmosphere, idea and content. Close the doors tightly, turn off the lights, it will be scary.

Sadness

Country: Taiwan

Year: 2021

Rating IMDb: 6.5

ProducerStory by: Rob Jabbaz

CastCast: Berant Zhu, Regina Lei, Wang Quchiang, Chen Yingrui, Emerson Tsai

The planet was struck by an unknown pandemic. Over the years, mankind has become accustomed to a seemingly harmless virus. Some associate the lack of quarantine with political spitting, others perceive the disease as nothing more than a flu. After a sudden mutation of the infection, all carriers of the strain become possessed. The former people are driven only by two instincts. Thirst for unimaginable violence and all-consuming lust.

The Taiwanese slasher does not hesitate to exploit the real events of recent years. The tape is replete with frank scenes of violence, forcing the most hardened viewer to turn away from the screen. Referring to the comic book Crossed, widely known in narrow circles, the authors recall the blackness of the nature of human essence.

Antivirus

Country: Canada

Year: 2012

Rating IMDb: 6.0

ProducerStory by: Brandon Cronenberg

CastCast: Caleb Landry Jones, Sarah Gadon, Lisa Berry, Douglas Smith, Nenna Abuv

Near future. Society, as at all times, tries to be as close as possible to its idols. Only now the objects of desire are not personal items and autographs of stars, but their viruses. Sid March, an employee of one of the clinics selling vaccines, decides to go even deeper. Once on the black market with an exclusive product, he realizes that an expensive infection is just the tip of the iceberg of a sick industry.

The film was directed by Brandon Cronenberg, the son of the body horror king David Cronenberg, who gave cinematography such imperishable films as Videodrome, Existence and The Fly. Following in the footsteps of his father, Brandon focuses on the metamorphoses of the human body, albeit to a lesser extent. The debut picture is not so much frightening as it disgusts with the naturalness of the scenes of a progressive illness and the understanding that the scenario can be realized in real life. If it hasn’t happened yet.

Tusk

Country: USA

Year: 2014

Rating IMDb:

ProducerStory by: Kevin Smith

CastCast: Michael Parks, Justin Long, Genesis Rodriguez, Hayley Joel Osment, Johnny Depp and others.

A young journalist goes off to interview for his podcast and disappears from the radar. Worried about the disappearance, his girlfriend and close friend set out to look for the missing person. Over time, their search leads to an expensive mansion, where they will see something that even the sickest mind cannot imagine.

The work of Kevin Smith, better known as Silent Bob, can be called a kind of parody of the notorious Centipede Man. Despite the trash component, there is a terrible dissonance when watching, when you don’t understand whether to laugh or close your eyes. The film switches from frankly silly comedy to extremely hard-hitting horror. A must see for fans of dark comedies.

Numb with fear

Country: Argentina

Year:2018

Rating IMDb: 6.4

Producer: Damien Runya

CastCast: Ariel Chavarria, Maximiliano Ghione, Norberto Gonzalo, Hugo Albrich, George L. Lewis and others.

A series of murders that defy logical explanation take place in a small town in three houses in the neighborhood. A police officer, faced with strange events, decides to involve a company that specializes in paranormal activity. But even experienced “scientists” were not prepared for what awaits them during the investigation.

The film begins with extremely absurd and dubious footage. It continues with a cliché twist in the style of “Astral” and other standard scarecrows. But don’t rush to turn it off, and the Argentines will reward you with eerie imagery and a disturbing atmosphere that has long since left Western films.

raw

Country: France, Italy, Belgium

Year: 2016

Rating IMDb: 7.0

ProducerStory by: Julie Ducournot

CastCast: Ariel Chavarria, Maximiliano Ghione, Norberto Gonzalo, Hugo Albrich, George L. Lewis and others.

Being a vegetarian, Justine enters a veterinary college, where her sister has already studied several courses. At the student initiation ceremony, newcomers are forced to eat a rabbit kidney and doused in animal blood. After such rituals, the girl begins to complain of malaise and the spread of infection throughout the body, which doctors attribute to poisoning. However, a series of further uncontrollable acts of the student leads to shocking details of her childhood.

Despite the presence of gender themes, the film “Raw” has a very stylish visuals and an amazing soundtrack. Yes, and the agenda itself is played organically and does not focus attention on itself. As a fan of Cronenberg, Julie Ducourneau presents her feminine take on the body horror genre. It is noteworthy that in the French box office the picture came out with a completely different name, which more colorfully defines what is happening on the screen. You can only find out by watching the movie to the very last line.

reincarnation

Country: USA

Year: 2018

Rating IMDb: 7.3

ProducerStory by: Ari Aster

CastCast: Alex Wolff, Gabriel Byrne, Toni Collette, Milly Shapiro, Christy Summerhayes

After the death of her mother, the life of the artist Annie and her family turns into a nightmare step by step. Attempts to rationally explain and survive what is happening reveal the terrible details of the family, acquiring occult shades. Trying by all means to protect loved ones, Annie does not understand that everything has long been decided without her knowledge.

Ari Astaire’s debut tape immediately gained cult status among connoisseurs of new wave horror. Instead of the usual screamers, the director scares with an unhurried narration and a viscous injection of fear of hopelessness. “Reincarnation” or, if we ignore the translation of Russian distributors, “Heritable” subtly intertwines heavy psychological drama and occult mysticism, leaving an ambiguous impression and an unsettling aftertaste after the finale.

Shed in a woods

Country: USA

Year: 2011

Rating IMDb: 7.0

ProducerStory by: Drew Goddard

CastCast: Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Fran Krantz, Jesse Williams

A group of teenagers goes on vacation to a remote place in the forest, away from people and the bustle of the city. Having settled in an abandoned hut, the company finds strange objects in the basement that look like artifacts or props for horror films. After a while, they notice that they have fallen into the script of a movie with a fatal outcome or someone’s terrible game, the rules of which will affect the fate of all mankind.

Perhaps we will complete the selection with the lightest, but no less interesting film. The plot of the film begins as a typical teenage horror movie. But closer to the finale, the viewer begins to understand that the absurdities and hackneyed clichés do not define the picture as a genre, but are part of the plot. In addition, “The Cabin in the Woods” is a clear reference to an online community such as the SCP-Foundation. Who knows will understand.
