Since new traffic rules were published last month, drivers in the UK are now banned from touching their phone while driving. As such, fast food customers are now ineligible to use Apple Pay when purchasing food from the store. Now a warning for McDonald’s, KFC, Greggs, Costa and Burger King customers.
For those unfamiliar with Apple Pay, it’s a way to pay using your iPhone, Mac, or Apple Watch. At retail stores and restaurants, you can use Apple Pay by simply holding your iPhone or Apple Watch at the checkout. Your information is stored in your Apple Wallet and works with debit cards, credit cards, bonus cards, and more.
Drivers from the UK can face a £200 fine and 6 points on their driver’s license for using a phone while driving; even on the go. A RAC spokesperson told Birmingham Live:
Every driver should always make sure they’re parked and have their engine turned off before using a portable phone – anything else can get you into trouble, even if it’s in a car park, auto repair shop, or gas station.
In addition, a Twitter user asked the police account to indicate whether using Apple Pay in a car is illegal. The account goes on to clarify that as long as your engine is off and the handbrake is on, you’re fine; if not, then it’s illegal.
