During a Diablo Immortal stream on June 11, popular streamer Asmongold got himself banned from the streaming platform after briefly using racist terms in the game’s unmoderated chat. Since this was not the chat of Asmongold’s viewers, it could not be moderated. By his own admission, Asmongold tried not to pay attention to these terms in the stream, which Twitch seemed to interpret as silent approval.
Asmongold feels unfairly treated
Asmongold contacted Twitch directly after the ban, which extended not only to his secondary channel but also to his main channel, and filed a written appeal against the penalty, but to no avail. He then published a statement video on YouTube in which he publicly addressed his situation.
A short time after he made the matter public, Twitch responded to the streamer’s objection and withdrew the ban. Then he talked to his viewers about the whole situation in his next stream and went to court with the streaming platform. He particularly emphasized the fact that he had to go public to get a reaction from Twitch.
In his eyes, the behavior of the platform was “ridiculous” and “unprofessional”. In particular, he called the person(s) responsible for the ban on Twitch “idiots”. Nevertheless, he was grateful for the withdrawal of his ban.
Ban is not an isolated case
Over the past few years, there has been repeated dissatisfaction with the streaming platform. Many content creators feel misunderstood by Twitch and sometimes even uncomfortable on the platform. Asmongold himself has repeatedly taken time out from the streaming platform in recent years, so there has even been speculation that he is leaving Twitch for good. Other streamers like Pokimane have already taken a break from the streaming platform.
