Deus Ex is coming back in a big way and wants to challenge Cyberpunk 2077. At least that’s what journalist and podcaster Jeff Grubb claims.

He had spoken to a new edition of Giant Bomb’s Game Mess Mornings about the new Deus Ex that is currently being developed by developer Eidos. Here is the excerpt as a Twitter clip:

What does Jeff Grubb say exactly?

Grubb admits that talks about a new Deus Ex at Eidos are still in the early stages. However, the studio is very eager to bring the brand back and challenge the top dog Cyberpunk 2077. Here is some wording:

From what I’ve heard, the studio wants to get back to Deus Ex as soon as possible. They want to challenge Cyberpunk 2077 and do what Cyberpunk failed to do. This idea is haunting the studio right now. We’ll see if that happens! It’s still too early to say how this will develop. But under Square Enix there wouldn’t have been such a discussion in the first place, would it?

With his last sentence, Grubb alludes to the takeover of the Deus Ex studio Eidos by the Embracer group. Original owner Square Enix announced plans to sell giant brands in May 2022. In the historic deal, Tomb Raider, Thief, Deus Ex and other brands were handed over to Embracer for 285 million euros.

Who is Embracer? The name of the Swedish company can be read and heard more and more often, because it seems to be buying up everything that isn’t nailed down: Darksiders, Titan Quest, Valheim, Kingdom Come, Gothic, Metro, Borderlands, Saints Row and many more Brands (and the studios behind them) are now part of the portfolio! In the podcast we address why Embracer as a group also poses dangers for us players

How safe is Deus Ex 5?

Jeff Grubb has been a video game editor and is considered an extremely reliable insider in the gaming industry and has mostly been correct with its forecasts in the past. Nevertheless, statements such as those regarding Deus Ex enjoy with caution.

Because Grubb, like every journalist, is dependent on his sources and has little opportunity to verify them. In addition, in a fast-paced industry such as the games industry, decisions can be discarded again in a short time.

When is the new Deus Ex coming?

Until cyberpunk is challenged by a new Deus Ex, it should take quite a while. After all, Grubb himself speaks of a planning phase, so the title should not be in active development yet.

Well-informed gaming journalist and author Jason Schreier agrees. He comments on Grubbs Leak in a post as follows: »Reduce your expectations. Eidos’ most advanced game to date is a new brand. If they make another Deus Ex, it’s a long time away.”
