Messenger WhatsApp faces a new significant fine for violating Russian law. This was reported in TASS.
According to the source, an administrative case has been initiated against WhatsApp. The protocols have already been handed over to the world judicial section of Moscow. Reason: the messenger has not yet transferred the data of Russians to the territory of the Russian Federation. For this, he faces a fine of 18 million rubles.
“The court received a protocol drawn up against WhatsApp under Part 9 of Art. 13.11 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation (“Repeated refusal to localize information about users’ personal data on the territory of the Russian Federation”). The hearing on it is scheduled for July 28, 2022,” commented a court representative.
WhatsApp previously received a fine for a similar offense in August 2021. Then the company paid 4 million rubles, but in terms of storing personal data, nothing has changed so far. It is possible that the Moscow court may in the future oblige WhatsApp to pay not a fixed, but a revolving fine, which will force the messenger to leave Russia, as happened earlier with Google and YouTube.
Recall that the law “On Personal Data” obliges foreign companies to store personal information of Russians on servers physically located in Russia.
