Since 2021, there have been rumors of a new rugged version of the Apple Watch designed for extreme sports. Recent reports have confirmed that this more rugged model is expected to be introduced later this year, and now Bloomberg claims that the rugged version of the Apple Watch will have a stronger metal case and a larger display.

Rugged Apple Watch

A new report published by Bloomberg on Wednesday reveals more details about what to expect from the new rugged Apple Watch. And interestingly, it seems that this model will have a larger screen than any Apple Watch ever made.

Earlier this week, analysts Ross Young and Jeff Pu said Apple is working on a 1.99-inch Apple Watch Series 8 model. It’s not yet clear if Apple plans to replace the 45mm model with a new one, or if a larger display will be a feature of an entirely new version of the Apple Watch.

According to Bloomberg sources, the larger display will be one of the key features of the new rugged Apple Watch. A large display with a resolution of 410 x 502 pixels will allow the system to display more information during exercise.

The report also mentions that this model will be made from a stronger metal “rather than aluminium”, making it even more stable. However, it is not mentioned which metal will be used – it could be steel or titanium. Rumor has it that due to the larger size, the rugged watch also has a larger battery.

The rugged Apple Watch is rumored to cost upwards of the $699 stainless steel Apple Watch.

Apple recently released a new ad touting the durability of the Apple Watch Series 7, so it seems like the company is really aiming to create a ruggedized version of its smartwatches.

Apple Watch Series 8 Rumors

Bloomberg confirms previous rumors of regular Apple Watch Series 8 models expected to retain the same design and screen size as Series 7 models. The main new feature of this year’s Apple Watch is the addition of a body temperature sensor, which will also be added to the rugged Apple Watch version.

It’s worth noting that according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the watch won’t show specific temperature readings like a thermometer, to avoid regulation from the FDA and other health agencies.

The Apple Watch SE will get a new, faster chip but will remain with the same design as the current SE model. All new models are likely to be announced this fall along with the iPhone 14.
