NEC announces its re-entry into the gaming PC market. The gaming desktop LAVIE GX will go on sale on July 14th. There will be two models in the retail store: PC-GX750 and PC-GX550, the higher-end GX750 is expected to sell for about 302,280 yen (about 14,962.86 yuan) (tax included), while the other GX550 is priced at about 219,780 yen ( About 10879.11 RMB) (tax included).
The company considers the PC-9801 a gaming PC, explaining that this is their “re-entry” into the gaming PC market, and the announcement coincides with the PC-9801’s 40th anniversary.
The target audience for the LAVIE GX Gaming PC is entry-level gaming users, such as retro gamers who grew up with the NES and Gen Z interested in gaming. This model includes an Xbox Wireless Controller, a USB-C cable, a chat headset, and three months of free access to Xbox Game Pass Ulitimate to play games immediately after purchase. One year of game support is also included for free.
The LAVIE GX750 is equipped with a 12th Gen Intel Core i7-12700F processor, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 graphics card, 16GB RAM, Gen4 high-speed SSD, 2.5G BASE-T compatible high-speed network and more.
Differences between the in-store models GX750 and GX550 include CPU, graphics card and storage capacity. The higher-end GX750 comes with an Intel Core i7/GeForce RTX 3060/SSD 1TB, while the GX550 comes with an Intel Core i5/AMD Radeon RX6400/SSD 512GB with 16GB of RAM.
The GX750 has three Display Ports, while the GX550 has one Display Port, and both have an HDMI port.
Other ports include one each of USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C and Type-A, one USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A and four USB 2.0 ports. The computer is also equipped with line out and other features.
LAVIE GX Gaming PC direct sales models can be configured with 32GB or 8GB RAM, mixed storage (SSD and HDD), etc. Wi-Fi and Xbox controller can also be omitted.
LAVIE GX Gaming PC models also support the EGG Project, which offers approximately 1,000 retro games, including the PC-9801, and an event that allows users to play 160 games for free.
Additionally, NEC is running a campaign to give away a download code for Capcom’s Monster Hunter: Rise Deluxe Edition (Steam Edition) to the first 500 users who purchase the device. The event will run from July 5th to August 28th.
In addition to the above specifications and supporting systems, the LAVIE GX models feature a chic design with Japanese modern taste, incorporating the Japanese motif of “Gozaushi”. The company says the LAVIE GX gaming PC fits in the living room without any discomfort.
The keyboard and mouse in the box are not gaming specific, and users must purchase the monitor separately. NEC Corporation will consider whether to develop monitors as part of its gaming products in the future.
