In the wake of the conflict with Ukraine, Russia has been subject to multiple sanctions and suspensions of partnerships on various scientific projects. In the first weeks following the conflict, the space agency Roscomos questioned its participation in the costly maintenance of the International Space Station (ISS).

Between reaction of pride and interested judgment, knowing that other orbital station projects could be played out with China, the position had given NASA cold sweats, especially since the director of the Russian agency Yuri Borisov seemed to indicate that Russian cooperation would not go beyond 2024.

NASA, however, had not received any reports of a halt in Russian support by that date. During a point concerning the mission Crew-5 of SpaceX, the heads of the American and Russian agencies wanted to be more reassuring about the interpretation to be given to these remarks.

Cooperation guaranteed until 2024. Then we’ll see!

If Russia will play its part normally until 2024, this does not mean that it will interrupt its collaboration afterwards. Without promising to go until 2030 as NASA would like, the Russian agency now indicates that the end of its support will depend on technical conditions and an assessment of the situation.

Roscomos will therefore not necessarily cut ties with the ISS after 2024. In the meantime, the Russian astronaut Anna Kikina will be one of the astronauts sent to the space station on the occasion of the Crew-5 mission at the end of September or the beginning of October.
