Recently, Mark Gurman said that Apple is developing at least two iMac series models,It will use Apple’s unannounced M3 chip.

Gurman also said he’s bullish that Apple could launch an upgraded 24-inch iMac with a standard M3 chip in 2023: I still believe Apple is working on a larger-screen iMac aimed at the professional market.

I imagine this model will use an M3 series chip, possibly an M3 Pro or M3 Max.For users who care about desktop space, I don’t think the combination of Mac Studio or Mac mini plus Studio Display will affect the iMac market.

Since Apple discontinued the iMac Pro in 2021 and the 27-inch version of the iMac with Intel chips this year, the product line is the only 24-inch iMac with an M1 chip on sale.

In Gurman’s predictions on Apple’s product roadmap, it seems that there is no 24-inch iMac with an M2 chip, but a direct use of the unannounced M3 chip.

According to previous reports,M3 will use a more advanced 3nm process than M1 and M2,Will bring better temperature control and higher performance. It’s not hard to see why Apple skipped the M2 and adopted the M3 as the processor for the new iMac.

From the previous market feedback on the 24-inch version of the iMac equipped with the M1 chip, it is generally reported that the cost performance of the mid-range version is higher than that of the basic version. The main reason is that the basic version has only one cooling fan and lacks heat pipes, which will affect the Thermal performance of M1. Apple called it a desperate move to control costs.

The immediate consequence of this is that it affects the overall performance of the iMac, leading to thermal throttling. If the iMac’s cooling system can’t control the temperature of the M1 chip, it will reduce its frequency, resulting in a drop in performance, which is what we commonly call thermal throttling.

However, considering that most of the users who buy iMac generally have work needs, once the iMac performs CPU- or GPU-intensive tasks for a long time, such as video editing, video rendering or games, the temperature will be too high and the frequency will drop. , affecting the overall performance.

Apple iMac new product outlook: will be equipped with self-developed M3 chip with radical performance

Some people have done related tests, and under the same task, the temperature of the base iMac will reach 95°F, while the mid-range version can keep the temperature below 95°F with one more GPU core.

It can also be seen from this that the iMac cannot be equipped with chips of M1Pro and above. The biggest reason is that the temperature cannot be suppressed. Once the frequency is reduced, its negative impact will bring a very poor experience to the overall work.

This is one of the possible reasons why Apple directly skipped M2. M3 with more advanced process technology will bring better temperature performance.

The highly integrated internal design of the all-in-one machine also brings great challenges to heat dissipation. In the case of keeping the body light and thin enough, Apple can only choose performance and bring a new iMac with relatively excellent performance.

Previously, it was reported that the iMac equipped with the M3 chip will not be launched soon, so the appearance of this product may not be seen until 2023. After all, the M3 chip based on the 3nm process technology has to rely on TSMC in the second half of the year. 3nm process technology put into mass production.
