How big will the computer be for 3D rendering, image editing, and video editing?

10 years ago, creative workers often had to be equipped with a heavy desktop. Five years ago, creative workers had mobile workstations that were heavier, but at least portable. But with the rapid development of today’s creative design PCs, the previously unattainable configuration has been condensed into a thin book like the new GeForce RTX30 series Dell Lingyue 16 Plus:

With the powerful performance of NVIDIA GeForce RTX30 series notebook GPUs,Dell Inspiron 16 Plus passed Lao Huang’s NVIDIA Studio certification, it can be used for 3D rendering, drawing and retouching, and video editing! Coupled with the toothpaste-like performance surge of the 12th-generation Core mobile processor, the Lingyue 16 Plus has a higher-level performance foundation.

So what is the experience of this creative worker’s “eating tool”? IT Home will help you to test it comprehensively.

Appearance interface

If I didn’t tell you, it’s really hard to realize that it’s a powerful authoring notebook. It has to be said that thanks to the NVIDIA Max-Q technology that has been upgraded to the fourth generation, a collection of system optimization designs powered by AI makes the notebook computer thinner and more powerful. Under the low-key and fresh deep-sea graphite color matching and simple and lively design, the Lingyue 16 Plus looks like a 16-inch large-screen thin and light notebook.

The measurement of the whole machine is 355.28mm in length; 247.50mm in width; it is as thin as 16.95mm, and the bare machine weighs about 2.05kg. It is light in a large-screen design, but it forms a sharp contrast with its ultra-thin body.

Open the box with one hand and open the B side. It is a 16:10 3K high-resolution matte screen with a resolution of 3072*1920, which looks very delicate. Of course, Dell’s signature triple eye protection technology is not absent. It reduces harmful blue light and reduces eye fatigue without compromising color accuracy.

After the actual measurement of the color calibration instrument, it supports 100% sRGB color gamut, and the actual measurement reaches 99.5% of sRGB, and the average color deviation value is only 0.22.

At the top of this screen, there is also a camera module, which can also be blocked with a slider. This privacy protection piece Dell has always held firmly.

The C-side keyboard is a standard thin and light feel, with uniform backlight and stable feel. It would be better if you could add a numeric keypad to this 16-inch computer.

The design of the touchpad below is very interesting. It adopts a unique design of “three sides facing the sea”. The upper side of the touchpad is integrated with the C side, and the whole touchpad feels very good.

Although the whole machine is very thin, the interface of the whole machine is still quite rich. It is equipped with a full-speed Thunderbolt 4 interface, two USB-A 3.2 interfaces, an HDMI interface, a 150W DC power interface, and a TF card interface commonly used by photographers, so there is no need for a docking station when going out.

Dismantling oven

So how does it fit into the standard pressure core of a game book in its thin body? In order to solve these doubts of mine, I will take a look at the back cover of it.

Judging from the disassembly diagram, it uses two very thick heat pipes and two large and one small fans to suppress the two cores of i7-12700H + GeForce RTX 3060, officially called the eye of the hurricane cooling system.

I have to sigh that Lingyue 16 Plus really makes the most of the internal space. Even the hard drive slot had to be placed at an angle. The 2230 solid-state cooling measures of this BC711 are also quite solid.

As we all know, cutting video to do special effects modeling is very memory-intensive. The Lingyue 16 Plus really understands our creators, and there is no option to cancel memory expansion for thinness and lightness. Two 16G DDR5 4800MHz memory leaves a lot of room for creation. Even if it is not enough, it can be upgraded to a larger 64G in the future.

It seems that the hardware configuration of Lingyue 16 Plus is good, so can it continue to output high performance? We’ll try a copy next. First use AIDA64 for single-bake FPU. After 15 minutes, the CPU temperature stabilized at about 63°C, and the power consumption was stabilized at 45W.

Then we used FurMark doughnuts for single-bake GPU. With the support of Dynamic Boost technology, the GeForce RTX 3060 laptop GPU on Lingyue 16 Plus stabilized at about 65W, which is exactly the power of RTX 3060. The sweet spot, aka “MAX-Q”. At this power, the energy efficiency ratio of the RTX 3060 is the highest, so it can retain the highest possible performance in the all-around product, and can provide the full features of the RTX 3060 in a thin and light design. At this point the temperature was only 60°C. The performance release isn’t terribly aggressive, but it’s certainly quiet. This performance is largely due to NVIDIA Max-Q technology.

Next we ran both of the above software at the same time, simulating maximum pressure and running a double bake for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, the CPU was stable at 36W and 69°C, and the GPU was stable at 60W and 66°C. That is to say, the maximum performance of the whole machine is about 96W. The whole roasting process gave me the feeling that it did not trade temperature and noise for aggressive performance like a gaming notebook, but rather a comfortable working experience as the premise, and then performance. Of course, this is indeed what the creators need. If your brain is buzzing with the fan, you won’t be in the mood to work, right?

In 3DMark Time Spy, the GeForce RTX 3060’s GPU theoretical running score reached 6785 points, which is nearly 25% higher than that of the RTX 2060, and the progress is quite obvious.

In CineBench R23, which represents the theoretical performance of the CPU, it scored 1769 points for single core and 17520 points for multi-core. This CPU improvement is really not small.

NVIDIA Studio helps creative production create unlimited speed

As we mentioned earlier, Lingyue 16 Plus claims to be the main creative production, relying on NVIDIA RTX GPU and more than 75 creative applications that have been accelerated by NVIDIA Studio. Most of these applications can use AI computing power to greatly improve work efficiency.

Not only does it provide performance support on the hardware, the factory-built driver of Lingyue 16 Plus is the NVIDIA Studio driver. The Game Ready driver of the general game book is born for the game. The Studio driver provides more stable support for as many as 75 creative applications in the fields of modeling and rendering, video post-production, and live streaming.

In modeling and rendering software, GeForce RTX 3060 GPU can use CUDA to provide hardware acceleration for work. At present, almost all modeling software will be optimized for NVIDIA GPU, so it can achieve coexistence of efficiency, stability and compatibility. Here we choose several commonly used modeling and rendering software to test. The first is Blender, the open source modeling software that has been on fire in recent years. The RTX-accelerated OptiX ray tracing in Blender Cycles provides ultra-fast final frame rendering.

Use RTX-accelerated Blender Cycles OptiX ray tracing technology in views to provide interactive, photorealistic rendering capabilities for modeling and animation. Support for accelerated motion blur rendering and nanoVBD for easier bulk rendering. In short, when GPU acceleration is enabled, modeling efficiency increases exponentially.

In V-Ray, another popular modeling tool, RTX-accelerated ray tracing can be used to achieve high-performance final frame rendering. With AI-powered noise reduction, the GPU can further accelerate interactive rendering.

If the GPU Cuda acceleration is turned on, the score reaches 767 points, which can already meet the needs of most modeling.

Finally, let’s run another rendering software, KeyShot, which can invoke RTX-accelerated ray tracing and AI-equipped OptiX noise reduction for fast interactive rendering. We run both CPU and GPU cores at the same time. The CPU score is 2.31 and the GPU score is 33.54. The effect of GPU acceleration is obvious.

In the latter part of the video, IT House tested PugetBench For Adobe Pr and Ae for everyone. Pr is the most common video editing software. Using the NVENC encoder that comes with the RTX GPU can speed up the export of video and make the editing smoother. GPU-accelerated effects based on NVIDIA CUDA technology enable faster real-time video editing and frame rendering, with up to 5x faster output using NVIDIA encoding. In Pr, under the CUDA acceleration of GeForce RTX 3060, the score can reach 636 points, editing 4K video will not be stuck, and real-time playback of 4K video does not need to open a proxy.

With the help of NVIDIA CUDA technology, the special effects software Ae, the key effects accelerated by the GPU can be rendered faster. With a score of 1141 points, it can do some more complex video special effects, and the large 32G memory can also bring more space for creators.

The author is good at live streaming. I usually open a live broadcast or something. In the past, if you want to do a game live broadcast, you often need two computers + a capture card, one computer to play games, and the other A computer CPU encodes the push stream. Today, GeForce RTX 3060 supports the latest NVENC encoder, and most live broadcast software is also compatible with this encoder. From now on, only one computer is needed to complete the entire live stream, which is a revolution for the entire live broadcast industry.

In addition, NVIDIA also provides the artifact NVIDIA Broadcast for RTX GPUs. It uses artificial intelligence technology to achieve noise reduction of sound input and output, as well as practical effects such as automatic image keying, blurring, and follow-up of the camera.

Now I use a simple set of USB cameras and microphones for live broadcast at home. Even if there is only one computer and one camera, with the help of RTX GPU, even such ultra-low-cost live broadcasts can have good results. .

The above-mentioned difficult software can be won, and the daily office is not a problem. We tested CrossMark and PCMark10, which represent overall office performance. In CrossMark, Lingyue 16 Plus scored 1853 points, which can fully satisfy all daily office work.

On the PCMark10 side, it can reach 7042 points. This productivity is not generally high.

game test

We tested some productivity software above, but Lingyue 16 Plus is equipped with a game-level configuration after all, so let’s run some games to test it. We open all games to 1920*1200 resolution and high picture quality. + Balanced DLSS. First of all, it is not a problem to play “PUBG Mobile” freely, and the whole process is stable at about 158 frames.

In another shooting game “CS: GO”, the average frame of running BenchMark can reach 275 frames, and the experience is also very good.

In the 3A masterpiece BenchMark “Tomb Raider: Shadow”, Lingyue 16 Plus can reach an average of 75 frames, and it is not a problem to play 3A.

The experience of “Eternal Catastrophe” is also excellent, with a frame rate of up to 120 frames, and it would be nice to have a high refresh rate screen.

In the most stressful “Cyberpunk 2077”, we can see that light chasing has improved the picture and atmosphere. After the light chase is turned on, the reflection effect of the ground and the dispersion effect of the light are more realistic, and it is more immersive to play. After we zoomed in on the details, everyone can see it more clearly. After turning on the RTX light chase, natural light is reflected under the headlights.

The wet ground after rain can best show the charm of light chasing cyberpunk, and the difference between the puddles below is obvious.

However, the impact of light chasing on performance is also very large. Therefore, it is best to use it with DLSS technology to bring a large number of frame improvements with the least image quality loss. When DLSS is turned off, the average number of frames under medium light chasing is about 43 frames, which cannot meet the needs of 60 frames for smooth play.

However, when the medium light pursuit and balanced DLSS are turned on at the same time, the frame rate is guaranteed to be around 65 frames, and there is no problem in smooth play.

In general, although the Lingyue 16 Plus is a thin and light creative all-rounder, it can still play most of the current 3A masterpieces after work, and the support of NVIDIA DLSS technology is behind it.

Summarize

Seeing this, you should know why creators like to use N-cards: At present, most of the commonly used productivity software and creative production software are specially optimized for NVIDIA GPU, and NVIDIA Studio is a set of software and hardware collaborative system. , which plays a vital role in the thinning and lightness of creative production PCs. The Dell Lingyue 16 Plus is such a creative production PC that takes into account both thinness and performance, and it is very suitable for creative producers as “eating guys”. Now is the summer time to change the phone, in my opinion, Lingyue 16 Plus is also suitable for student parties to use as an all-round book for learning games. If you need a thinner and more portable all-around notebook, you can also consider the smaller Lingyue 14 Plus.
