Following the release of iOS 16 beta 3 to developers earlier today, Apple updated the beta firmware for AirPods, which is also available to developers. The update improves the auto-switching feature and brings other improvements to Apple Wireless Headphones.
In addition to improved auto-switching, iOS 16 introduces a new feature called “Personalized Spatial Audio” that uses the iPhone’s TrueDepth camera to create a “personal profile” for spatial audio. The AirPods beta firmware also includes the LC3 codec for AirPods Max, which provides higher quality audio calls.
Keep in mind that beta firmware is only available for AirPods 2nd Generation, AirPods 3rd Generation, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max. Today’s build number is 5A5304a.
To install beta firmware on AirPods, connect your iPhone to Xcode to enable the Developer menu in iOS. After that, turn on the “Pre-Beta Firmware” toggle in the “Developer” menu. According to Apple, AirPods can take up to 24 hours to update after enabling this option.
It’s worth noting that the AirPods paired with the beta firmware must be running iOS 16 or iPadOS 16 in order to install the beta firmware.
iOS 16 is currently available as developer beta software on the Apple Developer website. The public beta will be released this month, with an official release expected this fall.
