What exactly is Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion? Is it a remake? Or is it more of a remaster?

Creative producer Tetsuya Nomura has a hard time pinpointing it, but it’s somewhere in between.

It’s complicated

In an interview with Everyeye (via Nintendo Everything) Nomura talked about this “complicated” topic, among other things.

“We had mixed feelings about it as we weren’t sure how best to describe the project,” he says. “At one point there was also a discussion about whether to call it a ‘remake’ or a ‘remaster’. I think the product fits the definition of a remaster more closely as the story hasn’t been changed and it’s still the same game is.”

“On the technical side, however, the graphics have been completely renewed, the models have been created from scratch, many scenes that were only subtitled in the original are now dubbed, and the combat system has also been updated,” explains Nomura.

“We’re still not sure which term best describes the game, which is why we used the term Reunion. It’s really complicated because it’s much more than a remaster, but at the same time it’s not a complete remake.”

A little bit of both, if you will.

Crisis Core Final Fantasy 7 Reunion is slated for release in late 2022 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
