At some point in the future, it may be more or less impossible to drive too fast in the EU, and this week the authorities have taken a step closer to such a future. The day before yesterday, a technology called Intelligent Speed Assistant (ISA) became mandatory for all new car models and vehicle types introduced on the European market. In addition, the system will be mandatory for all new cars that will be sold in the EU from July 2024.

ISA uses the car’s cameras, map data and, among other things, machine learning to check if the car is driving over the speed limit, in which case it can warn the driver in several ways, and even reduce the car’s speed to get it. within the border. According to the European Commission, speeding contributes to about 30 percent of fatal accidents, ISA will reduce this.

How this will work in practice seems to be that car manufacturers will be free to choose to implement any of these options: an acoustic warning, a vibrating warning, haptic feedback through the accelerator pedal or that the speed is automatically carefully reduced.

Another important detail is that drivers should be able to deactivate the system completely if it becomes too annoying, at least for now.
