Apple is said to have warned Taiwanese suppliers not to write “Made in Taiwan”, but instead either “Chinese Taipei” or “Taiwan, China” to ensure that deliveries of the components to China will arrive, Nikkei writes.
This should be a policy China has had for a long time, but it should only be after Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the island that these are actually implemented. Under China’s policy, officials can delay and even reject shipments that say “Made in Taiwan.” The self-governing island has its own labeling rules, where shipments must be labeled with “Taiwan” or “Republic of China” as the origin.
Apple has not commented, but this would not be the first time the company succumbed to similar contraptions from China. In 2019, the company removed the Taiwanese flag emoji from phones in Hong Kong.
