Apple’s second-generation AirPods Pro are rumored to release in late 2022. If you’re a music lover looking for a pair of new headphones, you might want to wait until the AirPods Pro 2 is released.

Back in January, I discovered new information about the upcoming AirPods Pro 2 from an investor note. In it, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo describes his attitude towards the upcoming headphones.

We expect Apple to release the AirPods Pro 2 in Q4 2022 with new benefits including a new form factor design, Apple Lossless Format (ALAC) support, and a charging case that can make a sound for users to track. We are optimistic about demand for AirPods Pro 2 and expect shipments to reach 18-20 million units in 2022.

How will it look like? Let’s go deeper:

Lossless playback

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that the AirPods Pro 2 will support lossless audio. This will require some internal reworking of the headphones to make them work. Lossless audio is already on Apple Music, offering higher quality audio than ever before. For many, this feature won’t be exciting, but for those looking for the best sound quality on AirPods, it’s worth the wait.

New AirPods Pro 2 Form Factor

There have been several speculations about what the new AirPods Pro might look like. Kuo noted that the new headphones will look like the Beats Fit Pro. Unlike AirPods, the Beats Fit Pro doesn’t have a stem, but instead has a wing-like design.

However, a leak from 52audio suggests the AirPods Pro 2 will retain the same styling but come with a redesigned case. In the leaked image below, you’ll see two holes on the side of the case. It may be used to play a sound when using Find My to find a lost case. We expect the Lightning port to remain on the new AirPods Pro as USB-C is likely to arrive in 2023 with the launch of the iPhone 15.

Health and fitness sensors

Beyond the lossless and new form factor, Kuo suggests the AirPods Pro 2 could include health and fitness sensors. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg initially thought so too. However, a few days ago, Gurman retracted his beliefs, stating that we shouldn’t expect any health monitoring features to come to this year’s AirPods Pro.

Rumors that the AirPods Pro will get health features started last year when Apple and Cornell University published a study on how AirPods could be a tool to control your breathing rate. The study uses breathing sound from AirPods microphones so healthcare professionals can use the data to assess overall health and fitness.

While we’re not sure if this will materialize, it will result in a significant increase in features over the original AirPods Pro.

Other Changes in AirPods Pro 2

Sources have confirmed that the next AirPods Pro will have the next version of Apple’s H1 chip. It was also noted that the device may have support for Bluetooth 5.2. We expect the price of AirPods Pro 2 to increase with a host of new features and updates. The first-generation AirPods Pro are currently selling for $250, but Apple hasn’t ruled out the possibility of a price hike for these earbuds.
