In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Matt Smith spoke about his role in the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon. It was also about his dragon, the heavily criticized end of GoT and his numerous sex scenes in the new series.
British actor Matt Smith has been in Doctor Who for three seasons, Charles Manson for one film, and has had the privilege of playing the Duke of Edinburgh in the hit Netflix series The Crown. In Patient Zero he fights a plague that turns people into bloodthirsty zombies, in Terminator: Genisys he gave the killing machine T-5000 and in Morbius he fought with the main character played by Jared Leto. And exactly this Matt Smith can be seen in the “Game of Thrones” prequel “House of the Dragon” from August 21, 2022, as Daemon Targaryen.
An interview with Rolling Stone
So it’s fair to say that Matt Smith is one of the hottest actors in Britain right now, and he’s starring in one of the most exciting fantasy series of the next few years. It is therefore not surprising that the UK’s Rolling Stone magazine named the actor after a joint interview a great feature article has dedicated. In the following we summarize the most important insights from the discussion:
- Smith describes Daemon Targaryen as multi-layered. He’s an outsider who can’t be easily categorized as black or white. He has many shades of gray. The relationship between Daemon and his brother Viserys is particularly exciting.
- According to Smith, putting on the blonde Targaryen wig every morning is “pain in the arse”.
- Daemon’s dragon is called Caraxes. He’s sort of an avatar of Smith’s character, and there’s actually a “real” dragon on set that you sit on and that’s moved by remote control while it fires fiery rain and all sorts of things at you.
- What Matt Smith also likes about the series is the cast of the other roles, but also the way the characters are drawn. “It is based on the book by George RR Martin. That’s one thing that speaks for us: we don’t just pluck fantasy out of thin air. It comes from the mind of George, who is really clever and created a world that feels like it’s transferrable.“
- The actor has yet to see the finished episodes. However, he very much hopes that the high expectations can be met: “Obviously, you’re standing on the legacy of a series that had a huge impact on people. And that will never be repeated. It’s a bit like a band: you have to play the hits, but you also have to hope that the second album will bring something that pushes the story forward.“
- Incidentally, Smith also had a few words for the heavily criticized ending of Game of Thrones: “Ultimately, the work they have created is good. Was it a perfect ending? That depends. It didn’t bother me, I liked it.“
- Unlike Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon is said to have no scenes of sexual violence. Nevertheless, sex will also be part of the world of Westeros in the prequel. According to Smith, there were even “a bit too many” sex scenes, and apparently more than in the original book: “You’re like, ‘Do we need another sex scene? And they say, ‘Yes, we do.’ I think you have to ask yourself, ‘What are you doing there? Do you represent the books, or do you dilute the books, around the time [in der wir leben] to portray? And I think it’s your job to be truthful and honest about the books as they were written.“
How does it look: Are you looking forward to the launch of “House of the Dragon” on August 21, 2022? By the way, you can watch the ten episodes of the first season on Sky.
