While there have been reports of AirTags being used for harassment, we have yet to hear of anyone trying to harass the police. Just recently, someone installed an AirTag on an unmarked police car in Japan, Sora News 24 reported.

Back in May, a detective entered his unmarked police car when he noticed a foreign object on its muffler. Upon inspection, I found a plastic box with AirTag inside. For those unfamiliar, AirTags are small – about the size of a coin and can fit in most places. Upon discovery, officers searched for additional AirTags and thoroughly searched every police vehicle. The question of who actually left AirTag still remains unanswered.

Who put the AirTag on the police car?

Sora News 24 goes on to report that when the AirTag was discovered, the police car was in the guest parking lot. Anyone could have accessed the parking lot, making for a mystery that will likely remain unsolved.

The most interesting thing about this story is that AirTag remained on the muffler of the police car. Muffler temperatures can reach 300 degrees Fahrenheit or more while the vehicle is in motion. Also, the highest temperature the AirTag can withstand is 140 degrees Fahrenheit. That being said, if the detective hadn’t spotted the tracker, it would have backfired—literally.
