The Hubble Space Telescope has released an impressive image of two galaxies in the midst of a gravitational dance. Explanations.
The two galaxies in question are the intermediate spiral galaxy NGC 3227 and the dwarf elliptical galaxy NGC 3226. Known asArp 94 and Holm 187, this pair of galaxies lies about 50 million light-years from the constellation Leo.
After studying them, specialists spotted weak tidal currents of gas and dust that link the pair in a gravitational dance, as you can see in the image above.
Hubble examined these two galaxies as part of a program to measure black hole masses by observing the gas dynamics at the center of bright galaxy clusters. In particular, the researchers noted that “The red color in this image represents both visible and near-infrared red light wavelengths”.
