Parallels today announces the release of Parallels Desktop 18 for Mac. Parallels Desktop 18 includes significant core enhancements, changes to enable IT managers to deploy Parallels and Windows in their environments, and support for the latest macOS operating systems. For Mac users who need to run Windows applications, Parallels 18 is designed to simplify the process and speed up workflows. Users can run over 200,000 Windows apps and classic games on macOS with Parallels 18. This new version is available in three different flavors to suit your business (or gaming) needs. Let’s dive into what’s new.
Parallels 18 Standard Edition
Parallels 18 Standard is optimized for macOS Ventura release to support new features and functionality and deliver exceptional performance. It includes full support for the Apple ProMotion Display with automatic refresh rate and unleashed performance from the Apple M1 Ultra, allowing users to assign more resources and run 96% faster on Windows 11. For those who run Windows games on macOS through Parallels, version 18 adds automatic exchange of Xbox or DualShock Bluetooth game controllers with Windows and Linux. It also improves Intel application compatibility when running the ARM version of Windows 11. Finally, you’ll find enhanced USB 3.0 support for real-time streaming devices, including the Elgato HD60, Startech USB 3.0 Video Capture, and more. With the release of macOS Ventura, you will have the ability to run a Windows app inside Stage Manager.
About Editon
Parallels Desktop 18 for Mac Pro Edition includes all the features of the standard edition plus some other enhancements. It consists of a network conditioner on Apple M1 Mac computers that allows users to configure various network conditions for the virtual machine (bandwidth, packet loss, latency). It isolates a network of virtual machines from Macs on Apple M1 Macs for improved security and runs a Minikube cluster with Parallels Desktop as the virtualization provider. It enables the use of network boot with Linux ARM virtual machines, which are now available on Macs with Apple Silicon. Using the Parallels Advanced Plugin for Visual Studio, you can quickly analyze application performance on a single virtual machine.
Business version
While adding all the features of the Standard and Pro, the Business edition adds support for SSO/SAML for licensing. For IT managers who want to deploy support for Windows on their Mac fleet, these features will make the licensing process much easier. SSO providers included are Azure AD, Okta, Ping, and others. IT administrators can also deploy, provision, or move a Windows 11 virtual machine between employee computers. Finally, it allows teams to centrally manage their participation in the Parallels Quality Assurance Program in a single portal.
“We’re proud of our team of engineers who continue to be at the forefront of innovation, bringing our users a much more powerful and user-friendly Parallels Desktop for Mac interface, integrated with the latest version of macOS Ventura and optimized for the latest Apple hardware. and offers valuable features to improve performance and productivity,” said Prashant Ketkar, director of technology and products at Corel. “It’s as simple and convenient as it gets, and our users can rely on Parallels Desktop for Mac to keep them focused on the work at hand.”
Compatibility
On Intel, Parallels 18 supports everything from Windows 2000 to Windows 11 on the Microsoft side. As for the Mac, it supports all OSes starting from Lion. For Linux, it supports Ubuntu, Fedora, CentOS, Debian GNU, Mint, Red Hat, Suse Linux, and Kali.
Apple Silicon supports Windows 11, Windows 10, macOS Ventura and Monterey, Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian GBU, RHEL, CentOS and Kali.
Parallels reported that 99.99% of Intel-based PC applications run great on macOS, including some of the heaviest CAD programs thanks to built-in Windows 11 emulation.
Parallels 18 Prices
Parallels Desktop 18 is sold either as a subscription for $99.99 per year or as a perpetual license for $129.99. The Pro Edition is $129.99/year and the Business Edition is $149.99/year (per license). If you have a valid Standard edition license, the perpetual license renewal costs $69.99 and the Pro Edition subscription renewal costs $69.99 per year.
Sight
I’ll have a full review in the coming weeks, but it looks like another strong release from the Parallels team. I’m particularly interested in the new SSO/SAML support for licensing. I believe that this enhancement, while not product-focused, will greatly simplify product deployment and license management. Parallels has simplified the Apple Silicon installation process and eliminated the need to join the Microsoft Insider Program to download the ARM compatible version. Parallels will automatically download the correct version during the installation process. With SaaS apps, Catalyst apps, and web apps, the need for Windows apps for macOS may decrease for some users. For those looking to play Windows games, use the PC version of Microsoft Office, or have specific PC use cases, Parallels 18 looks like a solid upgrade based on the previous version.
