The HBO Max app for iPhone and iPad received a major update this week with SharePlay support, reliability improvements, and more. WarnerMedia says this achieves its goal of moving all HBO Max apps to a “new, more productive technology stack.”

When first launched, the HBO Max app was widely criticized for being buggy and unstable. In response to these criticisms, WarnerMedia promised to update all HBO Max apps to use the new “next generation” platform with significant internal improvements. HBO Max for Apple TV received its version of this remake back in April – now it’s the iPhone and iPad’s turn.

The new version of HBO Max for iPhone and iPad adds SharePlay support, allowing users to watch a movie or TV show in sync with others. This feature is only available to HBO Max subscribers without ads.

HBO Max for iPad now also includes support for split-screen viewing, as well as an interface optimized for portrait and landscape on the iPad. You can also expect improved navigation and interface customization with the latest HBO Max apps.

As with the Apple TV update, the biggest changes in this version of the HBO Max app have come on the inside. With the new technology stack, HBO Max should be much more stable and reliable than before. Here’s the full changelog for everything new iPhone and iPad users will find in the HBO Max app:

Extending the functionality of the shuffle button to mobile devices. Previously only available on desktop and CTV, this feature gives users the ability to randomize the first episode they play for select series on the platform. SharePlay support for iPhone and iPad users (US only): US subscribers with an ad-free plan and iPhone or iPad can now use SharePlay to watch their favorite HBO Max programs in sync with friends and family during a FaceTime call. Dedicated home for downloaded content with improved performance and stability. The tablet supports both landscape and portrait orientation. Enhanced screen reader with improved navigation and functionality. The ability to split screen with other apps on any behavior-enabled mobile device. Updated, intuitive navigation. Exquisite design and visual style to make content shine. Chromecast stability improvements.

While the future of HBO Max is up in the air right now, it’s good to see the apps continue to improve. You can download HBO Max from the App Store for iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
