Many classic fighting game series have fairly consistent release schedules for sequels, but not Fatal Fury – the last game (Garou: Mark of the Wolves) appeared on Neo Geo in 1999. However, SNK is ready to fix the situation after 23 years. The developers have confirmed work on a new part of the famous fighting game. The teaser below doesn’t say anything about gameplay, story, platform, or release date, but the company said the sequel will represent a “new turning point” in the fighting game genre – don’t expect too much modesty.

The franchise has played an important role in the history of SNK and, by extension, fighting games in general. The first game, 1991’s Fatal Fury: King of Fighters, made a splash at a time when the genre was dominated by Street Fighter II. It was designed by Takashi Nishiyama, the author of the original Street Fighter, and focused more on story and special moves than memorizing combos from SF2. It showed that there was room for several games in the top pantheon of fighting games, and eventually spawned the still-existing King of Fighters series.

The problem, of course, is convincing gamers that they need to go back to Fatal Fury. Over the past two decades, the world of fighting games has evolved significantly, from 3D series like Tekken to extravagant games like Super Smash Bros. ultimate. It’s a crowded gaming arena right now, and there’s no guarantee that nostalgia will give SNK the edge.
