Apple is now in its fifth round of operating system milestone testing, providing developer beta testers with more builds of iOS 16 and iPadOS 16.

The fourth build for iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 has build number 20A5339d and replaces build four 20A5328h.

Feature changes in iOS 16 start with a highly customizable new lock screen, as well as updates to focus modes, photo improvements, message editing and SharePlay, improved device intelligence, expanded controller support, Apple Pay Later, and more.

Apple’s improvements in iPadOS 16 include the introduction of a Stage Manager for select iPad Pro models to better handle app windows across multiple displays, as well as a host of iOS 16 changes.

The fourth iOS 16 beta included changes ranging from reducing the unsent message time to two minutes, displaying a changelog for edited messages, improvements to the lock screen, to new wallpapers and the ActivityKit API.

The third beta adds a lockdown mode that disables various frequently used aspects intended for use by activists, journalists and government officials who can be hacked. Apple also included the first implementation of a shared photo library, lock screen tweaks, and changes to the Stage Manager.

AppleInsider and Apple itself are strongly advising users not to install betas on “critical” or core devices as there is a remote possibility of data loss or other issues. Instead, testers should install betas on non-essential or non-essential devices and make sure there are sufficient backups of important data before upgrading.
