iOS 16 was announced in June with a host of new features, including a new lock screen with widgets, updated notifications, improved focus mode, the ability to edit and cancel messages in iMessage, and more. The company released iOS 16 beta 5 to developers this week, and it has a surprise: battery percentage for modern iPhones. However, the once-beloved feature now seems rather controversial.

Battery percentage returned

The iPhone 3GS was the first iPhone to show users the exact battery percentage in the status bar. Since then, every iPhone had the ability to display battery percentage until 2017. Due to the new design of the iPhone X, which was the first to feature a bezel-less display with a notch at the top, some interface elements had to be removed from the status bar.

The battery percentage was one of those items. Starting with the iPhone X, users had to open the Control Center to see the full battery indicator. Apple has never commented on this decision, but many users claim that constantly monitoring their battery percentage made them anxious.

In the meantime, developers have created several solutions to get battery percentage back on modern iPhones using jailbreak tools. Apple never seemed to care about this until now. The latest iOS 16 beta brings back battery percentage to modern iPhones. But there are a few clues.

not everyone seems to like it

The thing is, not everyone likes the new battery percentage implementation in iOS 16. That’s because it’s really a bit confusing. As detailed by José Adorno of , the battery icon doesn’t match the battery percentage as it drains. This can easily lead users to believe that the battery is still charged when it is not.

The icon only changes when the battery level drops to 20%, then it turns red and blank. For now, Apple is making this feature optional, so you can turn it off if you don’t like it. However, enabling low power mode will cause the system to display the battery percentage. Also be aware that battery percentage is not available for iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 12 mini, and iPhone 13 mini.

Personally, the new implementation seems lazy to me. Apple could have done a lot better, especially for a feature that took five years to implement. Of course, we’re talking about beta software, so things could change before the official release of iOS 16 next month.

What do you think about the battery percentage in iOS 16?
