This Friday, July 8, 2022, Japan was in shock by a sad event: former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, 67, was assassinated during an election speech in Nara, fatally hit by a home-made weapon. The shooter was immediately arrested and quickly identified as Tetsuya Yamagami, a 41-year-old unemployed man and former member of the Maritime Self-Defense Force.

An already very dramatic event for the Japanese, but the Internet has decided to add a layer. On the forum 4chan, Internet users claimed that the shooter was a certain Samyeu Hydeosharing photos of… Hideo Kojima, designer of the Metal Gear Solid. The forum already has a dark reputation, its members perpetuate the racist joke that all Asians are alike. False information that spread, in particular on a Greek television channel and on the Twitter English: Damien Rieu, far-right politician and party member Reconquest!indeed replied to his political opponent Clémentine Autain (BIA), which condemned the assassination of Shinzo Abe, stating that “the far left kills”, accompanying his message with photos of Hideo Kojima, dressed in a chapka, posing in front of a portrait of Ernesto “Che” Guevara or carrying a bag with the face of the Argentine revolutionary. A tweet deleted when Damien Rieu realized his mistake, but the Internet does not forget anything:

A joke in very bad taste, and Kojima Productions insisted on publishing a brief press release, condemning the false information and rumors launched about its founder. And especially, the Japanese studio plans to “take legal action in certain cases”. Oh yes, the fake news are still legion, Hideo Kojima and his team do not intend to let them spread. As a reminder, the studio is very busy developing a death stranding 2 and a still mysterious title exclusive to Xboxno doubt some Overdose.

You can find Death Stranding: Director’s Cut at €35.99 on Gamesplanet.
