The AirPods firmware update process has always been a mystery. With the release of iOS 16 beta 5 this week, Apple has made a small change to the Settings app, which could mean you’ll eventually be able to at least view details on what’s new in AirPods firmware updates…
AirPods changes in iOS 16 beta 5
You could always view the AirPods firmware version in the Settings app by going to the Bluetooth menu and clicking on your AirPods in the list of accessories.
As a user on Reddit first noticed, you can now go one step further by clicking on the firmware version itself. When you click on the firmware version, you will see which software version your AirPods are running, as well as the current firmware version of your AirPods case.
You can also find this information by tapping on the new top-level menu for AirPods in the Settings app rather than diving directly into the Bluetooth menu.
Under this information, there is also a new explanation: “Detailed information about the firmware is available at support.apple.com” with a hyperlink. At the moment, clicking on this link won’t actually get you anywhere because there is no corresponding article on the Apple support website.
Ideally, this means that when Apple releases a new firmware update for AirPods in the future, you can click on this link to view the release notes. To date, Apple has never released release notes for AirPods updates. Reddit users speculate that this might be similar to the release notes that Apple posts for AirTag.
Finally, it could also mean that Apple is preparing a way for users to update their AirPods to new firmware versions manually. AirPods currently update automatically in the background when your AirPods are in a case and next to your iPhone.
Ultimately, this is a small change at this point, but it may indicate that Apple is improving the AirPods software update process and clarifying to users what’s new with each update.
