Apple is reportedly planning to transition the iPhone to USB-C for charging as early as next year. Now, an Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also predicts that Apple will release new versions of AirPods charging cases as early as next year.

There will be new AirPods Pro later this year, but the charging case for this model is expected to support Lightning connectivity. Apple also released its AirPods 3 headphones last year, and they also use Lightning for charging. Charging cases for AirPods and AirPods Pro also support wireless charging.

Kuo says:

I predict that Apple will release USB-C charging cases for all AirPods models in 2023. However, the charging case for the new AirPods Pro 2 released in 2H22 may still support Lightning.

This isn’t the first time Kuo has revealed that future versions of AirPods will use USB-C for charging. In May, an analyst said that AirPods, as well as other Apple accessories, will also move to USB-C along with the iPhone. It also includes accessories such as the Magic Keyboard, Magic Trackpad, and Magic Mouse for Mac, as well as the MagSafe Battery Pack accessory for iPhone.

This means that once the iPhone 15 transitions to USB-C in 2023, Apple will simultaneously begin the process of switching all of its products to USB-C. This will eventually become the end of the Lightning connector. However, with the dominance of Lightning, this will likely take years.

European Union legislation is one of the driving forces behind Apple’s decision to permanently transition iPhones, AirPods and other accessories to USB-C. The Common Charger Act will require all smartphones and accessories to use USB-C for charging starting in 2024.

The biggest disappointment here is that Apple is apparently waiting until the last minute to switch AirPods to USB-C charging. Ideally, the company should start moving to USB-C with the launch of the AirPods Pro 2 later this year. Instead, the AirPods Pro 2 will stick with Lightning, forcing buyers to buy a new charging case in 2023 if they want to standardize on USB-C.
