This week, Apple brought back one of the most requested iOS features since the launch of the iPhone X in 2017: the ability to view battery percentage right on the status bar.

Since the release of the iPhone X with the notch, Apple has removed the ability to view the battery percentage directly from the status bar, forcing them to swipe down to the control center to view the current battery level.

With the release of iOS 16 in just a few weeks, that will change. iOS 16 Developer Beta 5 has a new toggle in Settings that allows users to always show battery percentage in the status bar.

When power saving mode is active, the battery icon and percentage turn yellow, and red when the battery is low. While the iPhone is charging, it turns green. The battery percentage is displayed in the status bar throughout the system, including on the lock screen.

All flagship iPhones since the iPhone X have had a notch, but not all notch iPhone users will get this new feature.

Here is a list of iPhones that will get the ability to display battery percentage in the status bar:

  • iPhone 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13 Pro
  • iPhone 13
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12 Pro
  • iPhone 12
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone 11 Pro
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone X

All other iPhones, including the smaller iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 11 and iPhone XR, will not get a battery percentage display option. iOS 16 is still in beta testing, Apple may expand the list to include other iPhones, so owners of these iPhones should not be upset.

It’s not entirely clear why Apple decided to limit the availability of this feature, but it could be due to lack of space on smaller displays.
