The streaming service Hulu has released the fifth part of the “Predator” subtitled “Prey”.
It would seem that the alien, who is often associated with the Alien, is long overdue for retirement, but studio bosses are in no hurry to part with the monster so easily. The franchise has had a hard time for all the time, multiple adaptations only spoiled the viewing experience.
Did director Dan Trachtenberg manage to fix the situation? We understand.
Back to the roots
The authors of the novelty managed to truly convey the spirit of the era and organically introduce the Predator into it.
What is the plot about: in the yard in 1719. In the habitats of the Komachi Indian tribe in North America, the spaceship of the Yautja, an alien race of hunters, suddenly appears.
On Earth, he appears for the first time, and he has only one goal – hunting for local life forms: from snakes and bears to people.
The hunter Naru, played by Amber Midthunder, is called to stop the alien and save her tribe. Given the technological superiority of the enemy, she has to use not only weapons, but also ingenuity.
In its structure, the plot is quite simple, but it does not reach the level of absolute stupidity. All the actions of the characters look logical and practically do not raise questions.
Director Dan Trachtenberg and screenwriter Patrick Ason took the original 1987 film as the basis, and it was the right decision. Because they succeeded keep the original style of narration and the idea of the picture.
Here, literally in every frame, one feels a relationship with the original. Only instead of a masculine fighter, we are offered a fragile girl, and instead of soldiers of the American army – Komachi Indians and French colonists.
At the same time, the authors of the picture not only showed elements familiar to fans, but also finalized them and even added a new ability. This moment seems a little strange, given that the action of the film takes place long before the plot of the first film adaptation. However, it still looks okay.
Here the viewer is waiting for things already familiar to the Predator: a triangular laser designator, a weapon with three points and infrared vision. Plus, soundtrack completely copied from the first films, leaving us with a completely original character, including the iconic chirp (only a pity that there is no good old-fashioned soundtrack).
Got me and development, us for the first time show the hunt in detail. The way he moves from small prey to larger prey, how he collects the skulls of defeated enemies, where he lives and what he eats. Thus, we understand more how the hunt goes, and not just once again see the clashes of opponents.
Do not be embarrassed by the fact that the film uses the now fashionable agenda of a strong girl, equal in strength to men. This is not so, and it is qualitatively played up. Here, more emphasis is placed not on the strength of the heroine, but on her intellect.
Actors are selected authentic. Most of them are actually Indians. And they play their roles well, which is good news. Yes, in some places the development of their characters is lame, but in general it is done at a level sufficient for a horror action movie. You have time for them bond and empathize.
Oddly enough, the Predator in this part became the main highlight of the picture. In the past parts, this was not the case, and attention clung to him only occasionally. Now the main focus is on the alien guest, but do not forget about other heroes.
The visual is a strong part of the film.
From the very first frames, incredible views and landscapes catch your eye. They are mesmerizing, especially when shooting panoramic shots.
In principle, the entire film is qualitatively built on visuals, after all, the jungle was abandoned, they were replaced with the local flavor of North America. The predator is worked out to the smallest detail, it looks creepy and even creepy. Everything, as befits a real monster from deep space. It even seems to have surpassed the original from 1987.
True, the graphics used are still not as pleasing to the eye as even in the previous parts. This was to be expected, since the film was released directly on the streaming service, bypassing the cinemas. Accordingly, the budget turned out to be not very large. For streaming, this picture looks good, so I don’t even want to find fault with it, although there is a reason (especially for drawn animals).
The action scenes are staged to a high standard. It is interesting to follow the battles, shootouts, explosions and fights, and the final battle is simply delightful. In part, this is also the merit of the operator, who often selects unique and spectacular angles.
Personally, in some places I lacked that same bloodthirstiness, and this is probably for the sake of a relatively small budget. Because many deaths were not shown in detail, but only gave general ideas about what happened. But where everything is in full, everything looks natural and really bloody.
Possibly the best part of the Predator
In terms of the quality of the study, the plot and the general atmosphere, “Production” can easily compete with the first part. And it is not a fact that the latter will win, yielding in many places.
This is a fast-paced movie that doesn’t let go for a second. Only the ending can be slightly blurred, but it will not affect the impression much. By the way, be sure to watch the animated credits at the end of the film, there is a small hint there.
I strongly advise you to watch this new product. It’s probably the best thing we’ve seen on streaming services this summer.
