Three years ago, Apple discontinued the 12-inch MacBook. At the time, the fanless lightweight Mac got a lot of attention, but over the years people seemed to have forgotten how bad an option this computer was. Despite some rumors that Apple might revive this Mac, here’s why I don’t think it will, as the company already has a perfect alternative.
It was 2015 and Apple made the wrong choice. Remember the original butterfly keyboard? iSight 480p camera? Cheap and low-powered Intel M processor series? How about one USB-C port? If these questions make you feel “oops”, well, you’re looking at the original 12-inch MacBook.
Of course, there were a few things this Mac deserved credit for. Very light, with a good battery, nice finishes and a good trackpad. Remember? It was 2015, trackpads were supposed to be bad. But beyond that, it seemed like this Mac was made to fool people.
The 12-inch MacBook cost over $1,000. It was very expensive for a bad keyboard, a completely weak processor, and a terrible webcam. Of course, it took Apple forever to equip their Macs with a suitable webcam, but this one, installed on a 12-inch MacBook, was the worst.
The MacBook Air M1 is the perfect replacement for the 12-inch MacBook.
With all of that in mind, Apple apologized for that terrible Mac experience five years later when it introduced a new lightweight, fanless computer: the 13-inch M1 MacBook Air.
The power of the M1 processor surprised even Apple. Based on the iPhone A14 Bionic chip, it was good enough to compete with the best processors available on the market, and also provided amazing battery life: people could get up to 17 hours of battery life when browsing the web, working, using social networks. , consumption of streaming video and music. Truly a dream computer.
While it doesn’t have a 1080p camera or a new design, the 2015 MacBook era was beautiful to say the least. Now, with two USB-C ports, users can at least charge their computer and use another port of their choice with the MacBook Air M1.
Also, what really got me thinking about why it doesn’t make sense for Apple to release a new 12-inch MacBook – at least for now – is the M1 MacBook Air again. Apple didn’t discontinue it when it introduced the redesigned M2. It’s also important to note that it costs $999 – a reasonable price for a still very good computer.
What’s the point of a new inexpensive MacBook?
Bloomberg reported last month that Apple was working on a 12-inch MacBook for late 2023 or early 2024. The publication says:
Apple has also begun work on a new 12-inch laptop and is considering a late 2023 or early 2024 launch. If Apple continues production, it will be the company’s smallest laptop since the 12-inch MacBook was discontinued. in 2019.
Thinking that Apple will introduce this Mac in a couple of years, the company will be preparing the fourth generation of its own silicon. With that in mind, it would make sense if Apple planned to introduce a cheaper variant – perhaps with the M1 chip, but rebranded. The problem is that this computer already exists.
Apart from this possibility, I don’t understand why Apple ever introduced such a small computer with a processor that is currently available on a good Mac. Or maybe we could see a MacBook with an Apple Watch processor. Would you be into it?
Do you really think that Apple should bring back the 12-inch MacBook? And if so, how do you think the company would do that? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
