Guardian, the popular firewall and VPN app for iPhone and iPad, has a new owner. As first reported by TechCrunch, the app has been acquired by DNSFilter, a web content filtering and threat protection company.

The Guardian was founded by Will Strafach, better known as Chronic to many iPhone users, as a way for users to protect their personal information such as IP addresses and location data. Strafach was once one of the most famous names in the iPhone hacking world.

The Guardian is described as “a powerful VPN that blocks trackers”. The app works by blocking the unauthorized collection of your data by third parties by routing the data through an encrypted virtual private network:

We strongly believe that people should be able to use apps on their digital devices without fear of their data being sold to unknown third parties. Data you don’t always realize you’re sharing, such as sensitive health information, travel itineraries, and lifestyle.

Guardian Firewall blocks unauthorized third parties from secretly collecting your personal information, adding an extra layer of security from hackers and unsecured websites with our powerful VPN, protecting passwords, search history and other sensitive data.

In the acquisition announcement, DNSFilter explained that it will be able to combine Guardian’s capabilities with existing technology to “explode the market for secure web gateways.” TechCrunch explains:

DNSFilter co-founder and CEO Ken Karnesi said that while secure web gateways play a “critical role” in today’s cybersecurity strategies, the combination of DNS layer security with a combination of firewall and VPN “represents a huge business opportunity and eliminates pain points customers face using outdated technology. SWG technology.

Following the acquisition, Guardian will remain a separate application. The app is available on the App Store as a free download with in-app purchases and subscriptions.
