The PlayStation 2 classic Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII belonged to a series of titles that should expand the “Final Fantasy VII” universe. However, the signs are bad for a new edition of the third-person shooter.
With the release of “Final Fantasy VII Remake”, the world of the JRPG classic celebrated its big comeback, which has already been followed by other offshoots and the next parts of the series are already in the works. However, fans will have to do without a part of the original universe, because the brand’s spin-off, “Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII”, once released for PlayStation 2, will not be treated to a revised version.
The costs spoke against a Dirge of Cerberus remake
Tetsuya Nomura, who worked as a director on “Final Fantasy VII Remake” among other things, went into the reasons for this decision in a recently published interview in the Japanese Games Magazine Famitsu a. As he explains in it, the development team was very interested in a remaster of “Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII”. Incidentally, the same would also apply to the mobile offshoot “Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII”.
After those responsible had calculated the costs for such projects, such a project was quickly put a stop to. That’s why Square Enix is currently not pursuing any plans in this direction, but is concentrating on other productions.
However, Nomura adds that some characters known from Dirge of Cerberus are not irrelevant to the Final Fantasy VII Remake universe. Two characters that played quite prominent roles in the PS2 classic were known to be included in the Yuffie episode of the PS5 version of the reboot.
In INTERmission Yuffie and her friend Sonon met the two mighty warriors Weiss and Nero. According to Tetsuya Nomura, the goal of the makers was to “connect all Final Fantasy VII titles with a common world”.
More Final Fantasy news:
“Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII” was released in 2006 exclusively for the PlayStation 2. The story of the spin-off, which, unlike the main game, was not a JRPG but a third-person shooter, takes place three years after the end of its predecessor and one year after the finale of the anime film Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. Vincent Valentine, who previously appeared in Final Fantasy VII, takes center stage and more is revealed about his past.
Square Enix is currently working on the second part of the remake trilogy with the PlayStation 5 exclusive “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth”. In addition, “Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion” is expected to be released next winter, which according to Nomura should be connected to the story of the reboot of the main game.
