VTB Bank told about a relatively new fraudulent scheme that scammers have recently begun to resort to. Its peculiarity lies in the fact that several people work with a potential victim at once, which increases the chance of extorting money from her.

First, a fake law enforcement officer calls the victim and informs them that the police allegedly received a statement from the Central Bank about the compromise of personal data. The scammer claims that the debits were not carried out on a specific account, but on a single intra-bank account with the Central Bank, to which only bank employees have access. Thus, the victim is persuaded not to contact the bank, because, according to the legend of the attackers, it is he who is trying to steal the client’s money by transferring them to another credit institution.

The legend about the “single account in the Central Bank” is a success. Clients in a stressful situation may believe that they really can have such an account, and are ready to make every effort to protect it. Therefore, the offer to quickly take out insurance that will protect all the client’s money is the very trick that attackers seek to catch their victims.

If the victim believes what he has been told, he will then receive a phone call from a fake Central Bank security officer who briefly repeats what the fake cop said and asks a few questions. As a rule, he is interested in what banking products a person uses, how much money is in his account, and even what size his salary is. After that, the victim is offered to take out insurance, which supposedly will allow you to return the money in case of theft, and for this you need, in the old fashioned way, to transfer all funds from his account to a safe (or protected) account.

Depending on the complexity of the situation, other people may join the processing of the client – for example, posing as police authorities, employees of the prosecutor’s office, the Investigative Committee, etc. When the victim agrees to do what they are asked to do and transfers their money, the fraudsters disappear forever her life.
