The question of ownership of games and content purchased in digital format is on everyone’s lips. Ubisoft will quietly remove titles that players have spent money on.

Just days after Sony announced the removal of certain “lifetime” content from the PS Store, the question of ownership and the sustainability of digital games is on everyone’s lips. Ubisoft is preparing to block you from launching purchased titles on Steam.

It will no longer be possible to launch these Ubisoft games on Steam

A few days ago, Ubisoft announced the end of multiplayer and online services for 15 of its games next September. In the list, some Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry 3, Splinter Cell: Blacklist or even Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands. Games with strong solo components therefore, and yet some of them can no longer be launched.

This weekend, several PC Steam players noticed a message announcing that 3 Ubisoft games could no longer be launched from September 1st. All are permanently removed from sale on Valve’s platform. Those currently known to be affected are Assassin’s Creed: Liberation HD, Silent Hunter 5 and Space Junkies. No surprise for the latter, since the publisher had immediately announced the color, the title being an exclusively multiplayer VR game. For the other two, who have a single-player campaign, it’s a surprise.

The question of ownership of a digital product raised again

Note that this title will no longer be accessible from September 1, 2022 ” states the Steam message which specifies that it is “ at the request of the publisher “. PC players who have purchased these mostly solo games will therefore no longer be able to launch them on this fateful date. Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands and Splinter Cell: Blacklist, yet they too on the list given by Ubisoft, do not seem to be affected by these measures.

Does the end of online services for these games mean that those who have purchased them can no longer even access the offline content? That is the question. A few days ago, Sony also made waves by announcing the removal of video content purchased from the PS Store. If it’s not really big content either way, the question of actual ownership of a digital product comes up again.
