In early July, on July 1, the fantasy thriller “Princess” was released in online cinemas, starring Joey King and Dominic Cooper. The spectacular trailer of the novelty promised the audience a fairy tale about a fighting bride and a lot of action in the scenery of the Middle Ages. Let’s talk about how the movie turned out.
Plot
A princess lived in the kingdom, whom the ruler-father promised to give as a wife to the son of a respectable diplomat. However, when the wedding day came, the girl refused to marry and tried to terminate the contract during the marriage with a man she did not love.
The Lord was categorically not satisfied with such a turn. The failed bridegroom showed himself to be a cruel usurper, whose henchmen captured the castle and locked the princess in the tower. The ruler, greedy for power, captured the royal family and decided to force the girl into marriage, but the bride herself turned out to be not timid.
The heroine possessed the skills of a fighter, honed by many years of training, and hurried to the rescue of her relatives, deciding on the way to teach a lesson to the bastard who captured the castle and his many henchmen.
essence
Directed by Le-Van Kiet, “Princess” is essentially a fairy tale, but not at all a children’s or family one – it is a bloody action movie for adults with a feminist message, which is wrapped in the simplest plot. The picture abruptly changes the idea of the Middle Ages, setting priorities in its own way and shuffling the roles of the characters.
The rescue of the kingdom is no longer a brave prince, but a kidnapped princess. The girl does not have to wait for help from a noble hero, although she does not need it. According to the story, since childhood, the heroine dreamed of becoming a knight and trained in hand-to-hand combat along with sword fights.
The problem is that the authors do not attribute anything else to the girl. There is nothing wrong with the princess’s desire to be brave, strong and wayward, but there must be something more behind this. The protagonists of many Disney and Pixar cartoons come to mind. However, in comparison with Mulan, Merida and Elsa, the image of Princess Joey King looks pale and primitive.
Templates
Following the heroine of the “Princess” are the rest of the characters in the film. Moreover, each of them is nothing less than a walking template that acts as a cog for the movement of an uninventive story to a predictable ending.
Viewers should not expect bright and interesting characters from the tape. The royal family, the usurper lord and his bloodthirsty assistant, played by Olga Kurylenko, are worked out as superficially as possible and completely uninteresting.
Action
The only good thing about the movie is the action. “Princess” is clearly not the case where a couple of good fight scenes are buried in endless dull dialogues. Of course, there is boring chatter here, but in a minimal amount.
The action itself, and even seasoned with black humor, is enough for a film with a running time of an hour and a half. The action in “Princess” is staged spectacularly and gracefully. Characters use all sorts of swords, axes, flails and other deadly weapons.
Outcome
“Princess” looks like a collection of spectacular action scenes, squeezed into the most primitive medieval fairy tale with flat characters and a clumsy feminist message. Probably, the authors needed to add more cruel and uncompromising scenes in order to moderate their appetites and slide into a parody trash action movie. Then numerous stamps would look less unpleasant and probably with humor.
