Swedish Radio reports that the Swedish Transport Administration and several municipalities are now stopping several planned maintenance of roads as the asphalt has become too expensive.

The price of asphalt has increased by 30-40 percent after Russia invaded Ukraine. This is due to the fact that the price of the oil-based binder bitumen has been shockingly increased after Swedish asphalt factories can no longer do business with Russian companies.

In the long run, the stopped maintenance can make the maintenance work of the roads even more expensive. This is because the roads risk becoming so bad that they have to be completely renovated.
