Samsung can be called one of the most versatile companies. She not only mainly develops her smartphones herself, but also makes components for them in her own factories. All this is a huge plus for her in terms of production. However, there are some things that users do not really like. Among them the place of honor is occupied by processors. The company makes its own Exynos chips and sells smartphones with them in some markets. And, for example, for the US, it chooses a competing Snapdragon, which many hunt for. Now it looks like Samsung may be ditching its processors in favor of Qualcomm’s. But how is this possible?

It looks like Samsung has decided to rethink its approach to processors.

Why nobody likes Exynos

Surely you are aware that Samsung has been trying to make itself known in the chip market for many years. The South Korean company is desperately fighting Qualcomm. Despite the rather high quality, it still loses, and the launch of two versions of the Galaxy S flagships did not instill a love for Exynos among buyers, but vice versa. They really are not that good in some moments, but they cost the same, and people who buy such smartphones are a little deceived.

Because of this or because of something else, the company is thinking of abandoning the use of its own processors, but not their production. And while we have heard that Samsung will take a timeout and not equip the Galaxy S23 with an Exynos chip, it looks like we will never see new Samsung Galaxy S smartphones with their own chip.

Galaxy S smartphones may no longer make money on Exynos.

Will Samsung continue to release its processors

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the manufacturer is going to reconsider its approach and permanently stop equipping its phones with its own chips. Most likely, the Galaxy S with the Exynos chip will not appear in the future. At the same time, it is possible that the company will supply Exynos processors to other brands.

Interestingly, the leaks regarding Samsung’s behavior are contradictory. So, for example, some time ago there was information that Samsung would only produce Exynos chips for its Galaxy phone. Around the same time, other sources said that the company would abandon the production of the processor, since it was not needed even by itself.

Why Samsung releases phones with different processors for different countries

There are various explanations for why Samsung is using a dual-socket strategy in its Galaxy S line of models. For example, the most common is that US market still needs CDMA. (This is the precursor to LTE and is still used by some carriers). Exynos chips do not support CDMA. That’s why Samsung decided to use Qualcomm for the entire US market.

But we have to say that Exynos chipsets are good in CPU/GPU benchmarks and quite weak in communication performance compared to Qualcomm. The latter left by this indicator a couple of years ahead. Thus, Qualcomm-based devices can use the network more efficiently. They can also use advanced network features. Among them are MIMO, LTE-U, LAA/LWA and others that are relevant for some countries.

Not everyone loves these processors. So Samsung thought about their fate.

In this regard, the analyst said that Samsung can no longer ignore reality. “The S23 may not get the Exynos 2300 made by Samsung on the 4nm process because it can’t compete with the SM8550 in every aspect.” he wrote on Twitter (a social network banned in Russia).

What happens if Samsung stops producing its processors

However, we should also note that Samsung’s departure from this area will make Qualcomm the sole king of the chip industry. The most famous flagship Android phones will no longer receive Exynos. But there are no other processors besides Snapdragon for them either. Of course, there are solutions from MediaTek and they are widely used. But they put them in more affordable middle class models. Despite the good performance of MediaTek chips of recent times, they are still losing in the minds of people and top-end smartphones.

Samsung теперь может делать 3-нм процессоры. Почему это так важно.

It turns out that if Samsung completely refuses to release processors under the Exynos brand, we will lose competition. Well, or at least, it will not be in the top segment, where Qualcomm will become a monopoly for many years to come. And hence the indirect risk of lack of innovation, rising prices and other unpleasant for buyers. What do you think about this? Should I worry about the situation around Exynos?
