Mobile security platform for enterprise environments, Zimperium posted a report examining the 10 most prolific banking Trojans targeting Android mobile app users.

The 639 financial apps covered in the report represent more than one billion downloads worldwide from the Google Play Store. They relate to banking, investment, payment or cryptocurrency services.

The most targeted application is BBVA Spain | Online Banking (Spain). It is in the crosshairs of 6 of the 10 banking Trojans studied, knowing that the vast majority of them have been discovered since 2020, which indicates an increasingly strong threat.

La Banque Postale and Ma Banque are top targets

In France and with around thirty applications covered, these are two Trojan horses that target them. Zimperium notes that the La Banque Postale and Ma Banque apps are among the most targeted globally.

However, there is a correlation with the high number of downloads that in fact attracts the interest of cybercriminals. It is thus the PhonePe application for India which is the most targeted in the world.

Caf – Mon Compte as a financial application?

Applications for France are targeted by Teabot which is considered the most prolific banking Trojan among the ten. On a victim’s device, Teabot checks which apps are installed. When it discovers a targeted financial application, it downloads a specific payload for it.

Teabot has keylogging capabilities for recording input with a banking app. It sends collected data every 10 seconds to a command and control server. It relies on GitHub for hosting the payloads.

You might as well not be trapped by avoiding downloading obscure applications and by being wary of the famous link by SMS supposedly sent by a recognized entity.
