Blizzard stops the development of one of its emblematic games and does not plan any new content other than corrective patches.

It is in a brief and direct press release that Blizzard announces the mourning of one of its franchises. His game Heroes of the Storm will no longer know the joy of being fueled by expansion or content updates. After 7 years of good and loyal service to its community of players, the title begins to slowly say goodbye with a first radical decision from Blizzard.

Heroes of the Storm is a MOBA – a multiplayer game in which players compete in teams in a closed arena – which brings together characters from some of Blizzard’s iconic franchises, such as Warcraft, StarCraft and Diablo. Like League of Legends, the game is therefore based on the regular updating of its characters, and frequently offers content updates with new skins, among other things.

A step towards obsolescence

Finally… proposed, because today, the studio confirms that only the corrective patches will be maintained, and this, for an indefinite period. This marks the first step towards the grave for Heroes of the Storm. We also feel the emotion of this announcement – and what it portends – in the message from Blizzard which is intended to be rather solemn.

Going forward, we’ll be supporting heroes in a similar way to our other long-running games, StarCraft and StarCraft II. Going forward, we will continue seasonal rolls and hero rotations, and while the in-game store remains operational, there are no plans to add new paid content. Future patches will primarily focus on client durability and bug fixing, with balance updates as needed.”

The studio does not forget its loyal players and offers them” the incredibly rare mount of the epic Arcane Lizard […] to thank you“. This will be automatically available with the next update which will take place in a few days. This decision, even if Blizzard does not express it clearly, will allow the studio to focus on several other upcoming projects, which are more and more numerous.

We think in particular of the betas of Overwatch 2, the development of Diablo IV but also the mobile games of the firm which have recently been announced.
