The developers of the WhatsApp messenger have released a beta version of the updated application for Mac with native support for Apple Silicon chips.
The current build of WhatsApp for Mac has been powered by Electron since 2020 and runs through Rosetta 2. Apple’s Universal App, optimized for Apple Silicon chips, should run faster and use less resources on Macs with M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra and M2.
The WABetaInfo portal notes that this is an early beta, so some features may not work properly. However, the new version of WhatsApp will receive an updated design that is more similar to the style of Mac applications in general.
The sidebar provides easy access to chats, calls, archives, saved messages and settings.
The release date for the universal version of WhatsApp for Mac has not yet been disclosed. The beta version of the messenger is only available through TestFlight.
