Soon it’s time for the full moon again and this month the moon will also be a so-called “supermoon”, one of two times it happens this year. A “supermoon” occurs when the full moon is closest to the earth. Wikipedia writes about the definition of “super moon”, a term that doesn’t really have much to do with science:

“A supermoon is a full moon or a new moon that nearly coincides with perigee — the closest that the Moon comes to Earth in its elliptic orbit — resulting in a slightly larger-than-usual apparent size of the lunar disk as viewed from Earth . The technical name is a perigee syzygy (of the Earth – Moon – Sun system) or a full (or new) Moon around perigee. Because the term supermoon is astrological in origin, it has no precise astronomical definition. “

At 20:37 Swedish time, it will be best to check out the supermoon here in Sweden. Above is a photo of a supermoon taken in Austria in 2020.

Tonight the supermoon returns

The next time it is the same size is 2026

If you missed the supermoon a month ago, you can get another chance tonight. If the clouds now please stay away. And if they do, you will see a supermoon, next time it is as big as tonight is 2026 so it may be worth checking out in the sky. The most dramatic should be the moon when it rises, which is between 13 and 16 depending on where in the country you are. The largest, however, will be 22.50 according to TT.

The airline Qantas organizes ball flight

The Australian airline Qantas will make a flight at the end of this month where passengers will have the opportunity to check out both a supermoon and a lunar eclipse up close. It is May 26 that there will be both a so-called supermoon and a total lunar eclipse, what is also called “blood moon”, in some parts of the world. Qantas’ Supermoon Scenic Flight will depart from Sydney in about two and a half hours. The trip will take place in a Boeing 787 Dreamliner and astronomer Vanessa Moss will be present and comment on the events live. Tickets for the unique trip will go on sale tomorrow and prices start at just over SEK 3,200 for a ticket in economy class and go up to around SEK 9,800 if you want to sit in business class. To be able to book the tickets, you must already be part of Qanta’s loyalty program Qantas Frequent Flyer.

Today it’s time for a supermoon again

The brightest full moon this year

This afternoon it’s time to get the full moon of the month and February’s full moon will be a so-called “supermoon” which is one of three times this year that we have the opportunity to see one. A supermoon is the definition of a full moon when it is closest to the earth, something it also did last month. When it is a supermoon, the full moon can shine up to 15 – 30 percent brighter than it usually seems to do and it can look over 10 percent larger than it does when you look at it in other months of the year. The supermoon of the month should be the one that is perceived to shine brightest of all the full moons we get to see this year. In Sweden, the supermoon will fall at 16:54 this afternoon.
