A job advertisement indicates that Infinity Ward wants to deviate from the usual path. After several shooters from the “Call of Duty” series, the company could take on an open world RPG.

Infinity Ward’s portfolio is pretty monotonous. Since 2003, the studio has spawned eight Call of Duty games, including four games in the Modern Warfare subseries. The next shooter will follow this year with “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2”.

But does the studio want to be permanently associated with the “Call of Duty” series? One from Infinity Ward published job advertisement has given rise to contrary speculation in the past few hours.

An unannounced open world RPG

In the job ad, Infinity Ward is looking for a Narrative Director for the studio in Poland – a subsidiary that focuses on both development and research. What’s interesting about the description is that it mentions an unannounced “open world RPG,” which would be a departure from what Infinity Ward has seen to date.

“Your mission is to provide the best narrative and cinematic experience in an open-world RPG,” reads the job posting. “Work with writers, quest designers, and the gameplay team to create a coherent narrative experience.”

The applicant should also assist in setting up the team for the creation of film sequences and in training and supervising designers. It also includes hosting mocap sessions, collaborating with actors, and providing a “quality movie experience.” Added to this is the creation of narratives, story and scene scripts, character descriptions and storyboards for scenes.

With no further details on the unannounced project, it’s not clear what Infinity Ward is up to. In fact, the developer could make a big RPG. Or maybe the company is involved in just one such game, or it’s a new mode within the Call of Duty series.

Also for PlayStation players?

It’s anyone’s guess as to whether PlayStation players would enjoy a new brand. If Infinity Ward turns to another IP after two decades of Call of Duty, it’s not unlikely that it will become an exclusive following Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The established “Call of Duty” series, however, should remain on the PlayStation consoles.

While there are still many question marks behind the mysterious RPG project, one thing is known: “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2” is expected to be released on October 28, 2022 for PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
