Blizzard has announced the final release date for Overwatch 2 and dropped another bombshell: The shooter will be released as a Free2Play title, or – as the developers put it – as a “free-to-play live experience”.
After the end the closed beta of Overwatch 2 For many fans, the question was: When will the new Blizzard shooter actually appear? Now Blizzard finally provides the final answer to this question: the developers announced in an official blog postthat Overwatch 2 will be released on October 4th, 2022 for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Playstation 4, Playstation 5 and Nintendo Switch. However, there is one major change compared to its predecessor.
Founder’s Pack for all Overwatch owners
As Blizzard also announced, Overwatch 2 will be playable for free. Accordingly, the shooter comes as a Free2Play title on the PC and consoles. What exactly that means, the developers only want to talk about on June 16, 2022 as part of a separate unveiling event. However, the blog post talks about a live service model and seasonal content.
We can well imagine Blizzard continuing the loot box system from Overwatch and integrating it into Overwatch 2’s Free2Play model. It is also conceivable that certain content, such as additional playable heroes, will be subject to a fee, but the developers will make new maps available as free content.
Overwatch fans can already look forward to a small bonus: Anyone who owns their first Overwatch by June 23, 2022 at 8:00 p.m. German time will receive a Founder’s Pack for Overwatch 2. The associated free content – consisting of two epic Skins, a Founder Icon, and an as yet unspecified “surprise gift” – you must log into Overwatch 2 between October 4th and December 6th, 2022 or before October 4th, 2022.
