The IDC estimates an 8.2 percent drop in PC shipments for 2022. On the other hand, deliveries are expected to increase again next year, although the five-year trend is slightly declining. Therefore, read below about the rumored reasons for these changes and in which market segment the experts see potential for growth.

The American International Data Corporation (IDC) analyzed the PC market and forecast a sales decline of 8.2 percent for 2022. Accordingly, a total of approximately 321.2 million computers should be sold this year. IDC experts also estimate that within the next five years, an average negative growth rate of -0.6 percent per year will be achieved, while more computers should be shipped in 2023.

Is hardware getting cheaper now? GPUs, CPUs and DDR5 RAM in a market overview

The PC industry had previously set new record sales during lockdowns as more people started buying devices to work or play while working from home. This demand has now normalized and the corresponding devices have been purchased for a long time, so that the IDC classifies the consumer and education markets as the parts of the market with the greatest losses. This year alone, 8.2 percent fewer computers are said to have been delivered in these two segments.

But even if the pandemic is currently having hardly any impact on consumer behavior when buying PCs in western countries, the entire market will be negatively affected. Above all, the strict lockdowns in China and the effects of the Ukraine conflict on the supply chains are negative. While the former should actually increase demand, the latter prevents the delivery of important components, so that a lot of hardware cannot be completed.

The experts at IDC assume that this problem should have been solved by the end of 2022. Deliveries to PCs are also still above pre-pandemic levels, despite the decline, and due to new processors, graphics cards and higher resolutions, the IDC also expects more deliveries in the high-end segment in the coming year, while new technologies are also entering the Mid-range devices are to move in.
