Last spring, the Korean electronics giant LG left the mobile market, as it was no longer profitable to try to challenge Samsung and the Chinese Android manufacturers.
A few months earlier, the company had revealed that it would soon launch a new mobile with a roll-out screen that expands like a blind – a completely different use of the same flexible OLED panels used in foldable phones.
The blinds mobile never saw the light of day and the only thing we have seen before is a small glimpse of it in a press video and a photo published by a Korean authority, but now a video has been published on Youtube by Checkout Tech up that shows the phone in active use while the screen is scrolling, seen from different angles.
When the screen rolls out, new icons follow and it is obvious that the actual unrolling and rolling is done with the help of a servo.
A rumor from May this year says that Motorola is developing a phone with a similar roll-out screen, so the concept may survive even though LG gave up.
What LG, on the other hand, has released and sells is a TV that is rolling out in a similar way. The rolled-up screen is hidden in a box that also houses other electronics and speakers, and it rolls straight out of a gap in the box.
